EP6 Carilyn Livesey: The Pilates Queen Who Didn't Plan to Be a Teacher
Buddy Buck (00:00)
Hey everyone, Buddy Buck here back with another episode of Community Connect on Duvall TV and I'm here with Carolyn Livesey right here from Duvall. But before we get started,
today's Community Connect is brought to you by our friends at Zeke's Pizza. So locally owned and operated by Ryan and Carly right here in Duvall. And I got to say incredible pizza and they do deliver beer and wine, which a lot of people don't know this. And my go-to orders are the John Candy, the Dragon or any custom pie. So with that,
Carolyn, thanks for joining. How you doing?
Carilyn Livesey (00:30)
Thanks for having me.
Buddy Buck (00:32)
Yeah, for sure. Well, I'm going to start right off the top before we even know what you do and you know all the things I got to know. What is your favorite smell?
Carilyn Livesey (00:40)
wow.
Favorite smell. clean sheets.
Buddy Buck (00:44)
Clean sheets. Interesting fact. So we've done probably a handful of these, I would say maybe five or six. And I think three of the answers have to do with clean, like clean, fresh laundry, ⁓ know, cleaning, cleaning products.
Carilyn Livesey (00:54)
Yep, I almost have fresh laundry, but
I like like the the sheet closet or they're all lined up perfectly folded and they smell clean. Yes
Buddy Buck (01:07)
Okay,
not a little OCD in there at all. I love that. Yeah, I would love the lined up closet as well. Well, tell us a little bit. who are you? What do you do? And you know, how long have you lived in Duvall?
Carilyn Livesey (01:19)
Alright, so I'm Carolyn, Livesey and I've lived in Duvall for eight years now, and I teach Pilates. So I'm opening a Pilates studio here in Duvall. And yeah, we live here in Duvall near Judd Park.
Buddy Buck (01:33)
Oh, very cool. Awesome. We're actually closing on a listing of ours around the corner of Judd Park this week. So that's a really cool spot. I love that area. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. So we're about five minutes, I would say, south of Judd. So yeah, it was kind of cool because I would just be able to take my Segway over to the listing That's kind of a dream just to be able to take my Segway everywhere.
Carilyn Livesey (01:39)
really? wow. So maybe you will see us out walking our dogs.
yeah. Yep.
Buddy Buck (01:59)
in town, you know, you get the one that goes up the hills are good shape So so tell us a little bit more about the studio. So when does it open? I know you have 15 year, background in Pilates just from our prior conversation. And then so tell us a little bit about like, actually, let me go back. So when you first moved here, there's a really funny story we're talking about, about when your husband was like, hey, I'm going to maybe move to Redmond. Let's go to Redmond. And you were like,
Carilyn Livesey (02:02)
Yep.
Mm-hmm.
you
Buddy Buck (02:25)
Okay, tell us a little bit about that.
Carilyn Livesey (02:26)
Yeah,
I said, ⁓ I thought in my head, California, that sounds sunny and warm. I love it. Then I looked it up on a map and was like, ⁓ this is apparently in Washington right outside of Seattle and that sounds very rainy and gray. Not so lovely.
Buddy Buck (02:45)
Yeah, and where were you guys coming
from before then? Where were you moving from at that point?
Carilyn Livesey (02:49)
We were moving from the Midwest in Oklahoma. Yeah.
Buddy Buck (02:52)
Okay. So yeah, it was
either just far south or far ⁓ north from the Midwest.
Carilyn Livesey (02:56)
Yep, yeah, I thought I was going
somewhere sunnier than I was, but it was definitely not.
Buddy Buck (03:03)
Yeah.
And so you're going to open the studio right on Main Street above...
Carilyn Livesey (03:07)
Yes,
above crossfit, big girl.
Buddy Buck (03:10)
CrossFit Gym, yeah, yeah, very cool. So Big
Rock or just right there on Main Street, that's such a great location for you guys. When do you open your doors or have you already started that process? Are you close?
Carilyn Livesey (03:21)
Yeah, I've started. So I started taking clients in my home studio in December. So I've been working with small groups of people there for a little bit. And then I'm moving equipment into the studio today. So when I'm done, we're going to carry it down the hill in a truck hopefully.
Buddy Buck (03:41)
Cool.
carry it there.
That would be a good idea. So when can people expect to have the actual storefront open or the brick and mortar?
Carilyn Livesey (03:57)
Right, so I have a couple final little pieces, I'll probably, um, next week. Yeah. So February... whatever that is. Yeah. By the time people see it...
Buddy Buck (04:04)
Next week, very cool. So yeah, so at the time of filming this, it's February 10th. you know, things,
see this, yeah, be ready to roll, right? That's pretty cool. So how did you get into Pilates in the first place? Like what's your history with that? you know, that's pretty niche, thing as far as my perspective goes, but yeah.
Carilyn Livesey (04:14)
and I'll probably be ready. Yeah.
Right. It is. it's,
I think a bit of an unusual story. I got my college degree, nothing to do with anything like this. I have a chemistry degree and linguistics degree. So nothing to do with exercise at all. And it was right when my
Buddy Buck (04:37)
wow, that's cool.
Carilyn Livesey (04:45)
Now husband was graduating from college. He had a job lined up and he was going to be starting it after Christmas break. And the weeks went by and the weeks went by and the recruiter never called him to start his job. And he was like, what is going on? Finally, the recruiter came clean, but the person that was supposed to be his boss had a
brain surgery or something. I don't remember exactly what happened. Something happened. He was in the hospital. He wasn't going to be back to work for six to eight weeks at least. So the recruiter said, you can either go find another job or you can wait six to eight weeks to begin your job. So that was the end of January. So my husband, you know, we were dating at the time. He, he was worried about Valentine's day.
what he was going to get me for Valentine's Day. So he traded some computer work, he's in IT, with a friend of ours who owned a Pilates studio and he gifted me some Pilates classes for Valentine's Day. So I went to the classes and I did two or three and the owner of the studio said, have you ever considered being a Pilates instructor?
And I said, no, there is one thing I have always said I will never do, and that is become a teacher of any kind. I will never do that.
Buddy Buck (06:01)
my gosh.
And now
you're a teacher.
Carilyn Livesey (06:12)
And she said, well, I think you'd be great at it. You, you such a great personality for this. And I was like, no, I will stand up in front of everyone and just go and freeze. So the next month the training was starting and I started the training.
Buddy Buck (06:27)
my gosh, that's so cool. Yeah, definitely not on the plan. The life plan was not Pilates based on that story you just told me. my gosh. ⁓
Carilyn Livesey (06:28)
And it was, yeah, overwhelming. No.
No, I had never
done it before. I think I had taken maybe four or five classes before I started training. I do not recommend that. It was very difficult, but that's what I did.
Buddy Buck (06:42)
Yeah. Yeah. It feels like such a
guy thing to do is just like, I'll just give my wife this thing because I think it's a good idea. But apparently it did change your life. You just didn't know it at the time. my gosh.
Carilyn Livesey (06:57)
Yup, I was
really excited about it at the time because he knew I'd been wanting to try it but, you know, we were, we didn't have a bunch of money. Yeah, but it's, you know, it's expensive. You know, you have to have some capital to put into it.
Buddy Buck (07:02)
Okay, so there were hints in there. There were some hints in there about Wanda. Yeah. Yeah.
For
sure. Or have some IT knowledge that you can barter with, right? Yeah. No, that's equally as valuable or more, depending on who you're talking to. OK, that's cool. So then when you first got, know, like, OK, you're going to get in front of a room. I imagine, you know, I don't know how many people are in these rooms, but even if it's a couple of people, it still feels the same like it's a packed audience. What is did how quickly did you acclimate to being a coach or getting in front of people and talking? Did it just was that person correct?
Carilyn Livesey (07:15)
Yep.
Yep.
This way.
Yep. I know. So scary.
Eww.
Buddy Buck (07:40)
Like were you really naturally gifted at it?
Carilyn Livesey (07:42)
Um It was so hard her clients were Amazing. I mean they had been doing it for so long. Some of them had been doing it with her for like 20 25 years So they they were a very accommodating
learning experience because they kind of already knew what to do. They were very friendly. Most of them were retired. So it was easy to work with them, but you know, that's not where you stay forever. So it was, it was hard. It can still sometimes be hard, like walking into a new studio. Even when I moved here and walked into a new studio, that was hard and in a different way.
Buddy Buck (08:16)
Yeah.
Carilyn Livesey (08:28)
I started off in a small, more boutique studio where you might have maybe three or four people on a piece of equipment and maybe six or eight on a mat or like a tower unit as another piece of equipment. But when I moved here, I started working at a studio that had 11 people at a time, which is a very different
Buddy Buck (08:28)
Yeah.
Carilyn Livesey (08:49)
way style of teaching. have to teach differently if you're going to teach 11 people versus if you're teaching three to six people. It's a different way. You have to hold the room in a different way and ⁓ the way you approach it, it has to be different. So that was another learning experience. Yeah.
Buddy Buck (08:59)
Yeah.
Right.
Yeah.
Yeah, for sure. can imagine.
So how long have you lived in Duvall?
Carilyn Livesey (09:16)
So we've been here eight years now. We moved here in December 2017. Yep. Really great.
Buddy Buck (09:19)
Okay, okay.
And we
were talking a little bit before we got started. So you have a couple of dogs, right? We had the dog connection going. So what kind of dogs do you have?
Carilyn Livesey (09:27)
Mm-hmm. Yep, yep.
We have two huskies now. Yep, a brown one and that's a puppy. And then the older one is five and she's, you know, just the typical gray, white, black, you know. But they're both wooly huskies. So they have an extra layer of fur. It's a lot of fur. At all times.
Buddy Buck (09:32)
Nice.
Yeah, helds the puppy. ⁓ yes.
We're very familiar with the Wully. We
have a six-year-old Wully, a red one. Yeah, Parker, yeah, he's our Wully. So we have one more traditional red one and then the Wully red, which is her little brother. yeah, we'll definitely have to talk more about Husky life So Everyday Pilates, when I hear the word everyday,
Carilyn Livesey (09:53)
you do? ⁓ wow. wow. Mmhmm. okay. Yep. The Wollies.
Buddy Buck (10:08)
is your target audience? Is it like the super athlete? I'm going to come in every day and learn this new thing or can this be for casual person like me where it's like I show up once in a while or what's kind of the target there?
Carilyn Livesey (10:20)
Right.
No, no, not, not. I mean, super athletes are welcome to come, but that's not only the target. So the target is why it's every day is because I have a tagline. I'll show you move with joy. Is that backwards? So the tagline is move with joy, live with balance. So even if you're not in the studio every day, you're
Buddy Buck (10:37)
cool. Yeah, that was good.
Carilyn Livesey (10:45)
moving every day, right? And hopefully moving with joy every day. So every day we're, we have to move to live. mean, breathing is movement. So yeah, every day more was about living with these ideas every day rather than you must be a super athlete in the studio every day. But you're welcome every day if you want that I'm open. I'm not open Sunday right now.
Buddy Buck (10:50)
love that.
Right, yeah for sure. Right.
Gotcha. That's all good. So you're here for eight years. You're open in the studio here in the next couple of weeks. So what were you doing the years previous to this, kind of leading up to this moment where you go like, hey, we're going to go do this. Like, what have you been doing the last couple of years, say?
Carilyn Livesey (11:13)
you
So I've been teaching at a studio in Sammamish, Poladie Studio 11. If people listen closer down near North Bend or Snoqualmie, I highly recommend the studio. The owner is amazing. Super, super supportive. So I've been working there since 2021 is when I began working there. And then I worked for
Buddy Buck (11:49)
Okay, cool.
Carilyn Livesey (11:53)
about the past year at a PT clinic in Kenmore. So Blossom, Pilates, and PT is owned by PT. She's amazing too.
Buddy Buck (12:00)
Very cool.
That's awesome. OK, so you've been here eight years. So you know some some things for this next question, which is what is a perfect day in Duvall for you? So me as a real estate agent, some of the people that are watching, maybe they're like, hey, I've heard of Duvall or I've thought about moving there or what the heck is Duvall. That was that was quite honestly us seven years ago. I'm like, babe, where where is this house we're looking at? I've never heard of this place. And I'm the real estate agent, right? It's like we went from Kirkland to here and it's
Carilyn Livesey (12:15)
and then.
Right.
Oh, you
Buddy Buck (12:31)
my gosh, it's a different planet still, which is
kind of the best part. It's the small town life, but we're close to everything. what's your perfect day in Duvall or what are some really like a perfect Saturday? If you could just do a couple of things, what are those things for, for you?
Carilyn Livesey (12:34)
Yep.
paddle boarding on the river in the summer.
Buddy Buck (12:47)
Paddle boarding in the summer on the river, cool.
Carilyn Livesey (12:48)
⁓
I go upstream first, then I can float downstream. It's amazing.
Buddy Buck (12:54)
So when you say upstream,
get, you drive all the way up or how, you paddle, okay. You do the work early and then float down. That's cool. So you reward yourself with a nice float. Yes, that's cool. Yeah, so tell people a little bit about what is that like on the Snoqualmie River, right? Like what's the?
Carilyn Livesey (12:57)
No, no, no, I paddle upstream. Yeah. So I do all the. Yeah, then I can just float back down.
Yeah.
Buddy Buck (13:17)
the vibe, because the river is huge. Like, I can't believe we live that close to a river. It's like five minutes and you can like literally launch in the river.
Carilyn Livesey (13:18)
Great.
Right?
Yep. man. It's just so peaceful and calm. and especially as you paddle up further and there's not really many people out there. That's just quiet, calm, peaceful, hopefully warm and hopefully sunny. but even when it's not,
I mean, even if it's gray out, it's still just so peaceful. I really like it.
Buddy Buck (13:46)
Yeah,
I almost like, I could hear how peaceful it is like in your tone, like how you're saying it and just like, you're like drifting down to the river right now, I think. You're like, I'm there, I'm there.
Carilyn Livesey (13:49)
Yeah. Yeah. Just the water, you know. Mm-hmm. Yep, I am. I know.
The water sounds just drip, drip, drip. Yeah.
Buddy Buck (14:02)
Well, I mean, the weather has been really nice in February, so I'm hopeful for a really cool spring and summer because, that's a total vibe. And it is weird to me sometimes when we go up the river, like we have SeaDoos and so we'll go up the river. And it's weird how little people are out there sometimes and even sometimes on a weekend. And we're just like, whoa, this is like we're in our own. I don't know. It's like our own river. Almost like it's kind of surreal, honestly. You just.
Carilyn Livesey (14:06)
Yeah, I know, right?
Yep.
Right. I know, I know,
I always get shocked when I go in, like I took my daughter to the beach on Lake Washington one time and I was like, my gosh, I crammed in here like a sardine.
Buddy Buck (14:36)
People. Yeah, people. Right. And that's
not that far away. Right. That's the cool part is like you can go there and then come back and just be like in your own private little oasis. Right.
Carilyn Livesey (14:42)
I know. I know.
Yeah.
Buddy Buck (14:48)
So once you're officially launched, right? Well, we're going to get you, you know, we'll tell people how to follow and all those things in just a second. But like, what is something if you're Hey, you want to come check it out? Come check out our pilates studios for the first time. maybe they're not like, my gosh, I'm going to sign up for like the
Ultimate package whatever that might be but what are a couple of options for people to get started and maybe even just come try Pilates for the first time if they want to see how it feels
Carilyn Livesey (15:12)
Right,
right, yeah. So, I'll, you can come and always try out the first class for free. Once I kind of get rolling, I'm going to put that up. there are the membership options, so you can sign up for a monthly membership. That's for eight classes or unlimited classes a month. And then if you prefer packages, there are package options.
⁓ so those are kind of the ways you can come try it out. If you're feeling really nervous and you just aren't sure about joining a class for the first time, you can always come in. I can show you around the studio or you can text call with questions. And some people start off with private sessions. If you know, they're feeling really nervous about it, you can also do that. And then I can show you around and you don't have to feel like.
You have to immediately keep up with a group, but you know, any of those options. I'm also used to very beginners integrating them into a class as well. So, yeah.
Buddy Buck (16:05)
⁓ That makes sense.
make them all kind of tie in and feel comfortable. So I see on the
website you have the classic reformer. I'm not a Pilates expert by any means. You've taught me everything I know almost in one shot here. My wife's done Pilates though, so she was like, cool, I see she has reformer. And then are there some other type of machines or are you starting with like the reformer?
Carilyn Livesey (16:29)
cool.
right now group classes are only reformer. If you're interested in the other equipment, you will have to see me for a private. I have a tower unit as well and I also have a chair. But for now I just have one of each so you'll have to do it by yourself with me. Yeah.
Buddy Buck (16:47)
Awesome.
There you go. Yeah, no, it's great. I love it. Awesome.
Very cool. right, have you like watched Duvall TV or have you seen it or is that something like new when you saw me post about Community Connect or had you already kind of seen Duvall TV before that moment?
Carilyn Livesey (17:04)
Mm-hmm.
So I think I've seen a couple clips. I think I saw...
I think one of my friends posted a clip that she was in and maybe one other clip. I didn't know much about it though, but my friend texted me that you were doing these interviews and she said, hey, look, you should, you should do this. And I was like, ⁓ okay. That sounds great.
Buddy Buck (17:20)
Okay.
And here we are. Yeah, no, that's
cool. There's been so many different people from the town, like in the videos. So we've been here for, like I said, almost as long as you just about seven and a half years. And then about three years plus ago, I was like, you know what? I'm going to start a YouTube channel that's like talking about Duvall, because I really created that channel for my old self, because like you like that would have been really nice to watch a bunch of these videos and like how weird and quirky and fun and awesome the town is.
Carilyn Livesey (17:35)
Great.
Right.
Buddy Buck (17:56)
and like how cool the community like does things together. And it's just, it's just different. And you know this by now, cause you've lived here long enough to understand it. But that was really the drive behind Duvall TV. And then we also just launched livinginduvall.com last year.
Carilyn Livesey (17:56)
Mm-hmm.
Buddy Buck (18:12)
and you can actually submit everyday Pilates on our website. And then basically like when people pull up livinginduvall.com on their phone or computer, there's a search bar. So think of like Googling, but inside of Duvall. So they put in workout or gym or Pilates and then boom, your listing is going to show up and it's like your own website within living in Duvall. So everything's searchable, all the food, the restaurants, the schools, it's really for the everyday person.
Carilyn Livesey (18:13)
I am okay.
⁓
Right.
huh. Right.
huh. Right.
Right.
huh. Interesting.
Yeah.
Buddy Buck (18:38)
that
lives in Duvall. so that's kind of the word if you spread the word be like hey we'll put their listings up on the site with I don't charge for this the standard like hey I want to be found on the site like that's just the more people that put the content out there the better it's going to work for everybody.
Carilyn Livesey (18:54)
Right.
Buddy Buck (18:54)
Well, we're going to end with a little hot seat, a little speed round here. You ready? Yep. Ready as you're ever going to be. Right. All right. So coffee or beer?
Carilyn Livesey (18:58)
Okay.
Great.
coffee.
Buddy Buck (19:04)
sunrise or sunset.
Carilyn Livesey (19:06)
⁓ so hard. Sunrise.
Buddy Buck (19:08)
Sunrise, okay cool. Tacos or pizza?
Carilyn Livesey (19:11)
tacos.
Buddy Buck (19:12)
Mountain or the river? think I know this one. You could have both. The river, okay cool. ⁓ Early bird or night owl?
Carilyn Livesey (19:13)
Can I have both? If I had to choose, probably the river.
Me and.
Neither. Probably early bird right now. Yeah, same. I'm a day.
Buddy Buck (19:26)
Neither. You're like I'm a midday kind of person. I just get
a lot done in the middle of the day. Okay, how about texting or phone calls?
Carilyn Livesey (19:39)
probably overall phone calls.
Buddy Buck (19:40)
Okay, and then last one, dogs or cats?
Carilyn Livesey (19:43)
Dogs.
Buddy Buck (19:44)
Dogs, very cool.
that's awesome. That's very cool.
Thanks for tuning in to another episode of Community Connect right here on Duvall TV. Reel people, real conversations right here in Duvall, Washington. Where tractors meet technology, small town, real life. Buddy Buck peace.
Carilyn Livesey (20:00)
Thank
