EP7 Brooke Contreras: Clear Skin, Small Town Charm, and a Whole Lotta Love for Duvall
Buddy Buck (00:00)
Hey, welcome back to another episode of Community Connect. I'm Buddy Buck, your host. today's Community Connect is brought to you by Pickle Time, locally owned by the amazing Carol right here in Duvall, Washington. It's one of my go-to spots. I love the barbecue hickory burger and crispy fries. And if you're feeling frisky, the chocolate shakes are amazing. having said that, Brooke, welcome to the studio. How you doing?
Brooke Contreras (00:22)
Hi, I'm good, thanks, how are you?
Buddy Buck (00:25)
I'm doing awesome. so right off the top, before we get into who you are and what you do and some of my questions I got for you today, here's the most important question. What is your favorite smell?
Brooke Contreras (00:34)
My favorite smell? clean, clean, fresh sense. ⁓
Buddy Buck (00:36)
That's right.
Clean fresh sense.
is there a core memory maybe why clean fresh sense? What is that? What is it about that?
Brooke Contreras (00:46)
I know, like laundry.
Like clean laundry that smells. It's just so nice. It's fresh. It's not, you know, but ⁓ I really love lavender, but real lavender, not synthetic fragrance. So, yeah.
Buddy Buck (00:50)
Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah.
Okay, cool. And is there any
connection to the lavender or just another smell? Like is it from your childhood?
Brooke Contreras (01:06)
I am not sure. Just love lavender.
Buddy Buck (01:08)
Yeah, we just love Lavender. That's OK, too.
Cool. So tell everybody a little bit who you are and what you do and, you know, let's get into it.
Brooke Contreras (01:16)
⁓
Thank you. Well, I am Brooke Contreras. I own Queen Bee Aesthetics in Duvall and I am an esthetician, so I do skincare treatments. Yeah. Yes.
Buddy Buck (01:28)
Okay. I love that. Okay. You said esthetician. So tell
us, ⁓ tell the person that has no clue what that is. So you mentioned skincare, but what other things do estheticians do? Cause it's a license, right? You have to go to school, get a license, tell us a little bit about that.
Brooke Contreras (01:44)
Yes, you
do. Yes, you do. So I went to, um, a studies college and not only do you have to do a program and complete that, but then you have to be able to pass a state board, uh, exams, which, you know, is another feat in itself. So you don't just go to school and then magically you are an esthetician or a cosmetologist or Barbara or anything you, have to pass.
state boards and it is very, it's, it's difficult. It's difficult. So not easy. Yeah. lot of finance and it's a lot of science behind what I do. It's not just, know, people tend to think it's just about beauty and that, but it's not, it's about your skin health and your skin health is really important actually.
Buddy Buck (02:16)
Yeah, good. Yeah, love that. Well, yeah.
Brooke Contreras (02:32)
your skin is your armor. So good skin health will help keep bad things out and good things in.
Buddy Buck (02:40)
Yeah.
And we kind of joked about it earlier with Morgan Henley about, hey, men can come in as well, right? This isn't just a female thing. It's like, yeah, girl day at the spa and all this. tell us about why men should take this seriously too.
Brooke Contreras (02:46)
No. ⁓
right.
Well, I mean, we all have skin, right? So, it's just that we all have skin and it needs to be taken care of. it's the stigma, you know, it's kind of an old, that's an old stigma about like, it's just for the girls. And like you said, oh, we're going to the day spa and having a girls day and.
Buddy Buck (02:57)
There you go. And there you have it. We all have skin.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Brooke Contreras (03:18)
You know,
no, the guys are getting into taking care of themselves. They're like, wait, you're looking younger and I'm looking older? I need to get you in there too. yeah. Yeah.
Buddy Buck (03:29)
Yeah, no, that's cool.
okay, cool. Good to know. Good to know.
where do you guys currently live Brooke? Where does your family live right now?
Brooke Contreras (03:36)
We live in Duvall up on Mountain View.
Buddy Buck (03:40)
Okay, cool.
So nice little commute for you. Pretty short.
Brooke Contreras (03:43)
Yeah, yeah, about
15 minutes just to get down into town. ⁓ But I mean, I love it out here. It's beautiful.
Buddy Buck (03:48)
Yeah.
Yeah, absolutely. Okay. Well, speaking of beautiful. So there are a lot of really cool things to do and you know that I'm a real estate agent here in town and my wife's a home stager. So what are some, you know, people watching, maybe they've never been to Duvall or they've thought about visiting or even moving here. What would you describe as a really perfect day in Duvall? is, what are some of your favorite things to do here, Brooke?
Brooke Contreras (03:58)
Really?
I would suggest getting a skincare treatment at Queen Bee Aesthetics. ⁓ And then, yeah, going to lunch at any of our fabulous restaurants. Corie's Cafe is one of my favorites.
Buddy Buck (04:23)
smart.
Brooke Contreras (04:30)
You know, date night, ⁓ flavor bistro definitely is one of my favorite spots as well. The Tavern is always fun. So there's, there's a lot of great things to do. love, you know, taking a stroll up Main Street and like going into the cute shops, country collections and the rustic rows. Those are so cute. They have great stuff in there.
and sissies, espresso, and ice cream. I mean, you can't go wrong. You can't go wrong. Yeah. Yes, it's all so good. Yeah.
Buddy Buck (04:59)
my gosh, I know. And they're all like bam, bam, bam, bam. It's all walking distance.
so you mentioned Country Collection and also Rustic Rose, which are literally right next to each other. They are so cute. I know when my sister or mom would visit, you know, Eve, my wife would take them. And then always that's like one of the first things they would do just because it is such a cute, you know, if you come from a bigger city you know, Tacoma or Seattle or Bellevue.
Brooke Contreras (05:08)
Yeah.
Buddy Buck (05:25)
and you come here and you walk Main Street, feel like you're teleported almost into like a different part of the planet, you know?
Brooke Contreras (05:29)
Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. It's
very charming. Very charming. I love my city so much. I really do. It's a great place.
Buddy Buck (05:38)
Yeah, no, that's cool. So what would be your
advice? So if somebody was considering moving to Duvall let's say they either considering it or they just did. what are some tips or tricks or things to be mindful of? I guess moving to a city where it's, it's a small town or just whatever that is for you.
Brooke Contreras (05:53)
Right.
I mean the lifestyle is a little bit different. Traffic can be challenging especially. So we have beautiful rivers that goes through and ⁓ we get flooded and that is a huge challenge in itself. But other than that,
it's a great place to live, great place to raise your family. And I hope that, like, I love to see the growth, but also keeping our small town charm and not losing that is super important.
Buddy Buck (06:25)
Yeah, for sure. Well, I know you're very involved in the community. You know, ever since the first day I met you, I want to say we met originally at a chamber meeting, right? Is that how you remember it? Or yeah, totally. Yeah. And I was like, ⁓ somebody knew I just I love small business I was on the chamber board for three years. And I want to say a big congratulations to you, Brooke, because what happened to you this year? You are on a board for the first time. Which one is that? Tell us a little bit about that.
Brooke Contreras (06:34)
Yeah, yeah, think you, yeah. ⁓
So.
Yes.
So yeah, I'm on the board of directors with the Duvall Chamber of Commerce. So yeah. And one of my committees that I am taking co-lead with Jay is the Shop Local. It's something that is dear to me, honestly. ⁓ I love supporting small business and I think it is important to
Buddy Buck (06:57)
Yeah, let's go.
That's really cool.
Brooke Contreras (07:15)
keep our money as much of it as we can in our own communities and our own friends and neighbors. ⁓
Buddy Buck (07:23)
Yeah, so just let's expand on that a little bit. The shop
local. So when you say that is shop local an actual term or is that just a generic like, hey shop local, just stay in town or shop local like a brand nationwide, you know, around the country to shop local or tell us a little bit more about shop local specifically.
Brooke Contreras (07:41)
Well, I'm not sure. think it's kind of a global or national type of thing. But for me, it is about keeping our money in the valley, right? All of our locals. So it's Duvall, Carnation, know, all the valley area.
Buddy Buck (08:00)
Yeah. So as easy as Amazon is and we've all done it, we've all ordered stuff. It's really cool. And it shows up on your porch. But if there is something in town, go spend the money in town. That's the message. Right. Yeah, totally. I totally, totally agree. We live by that here too at our house. So let's just do a little bit of a legacy question. So let's just say 10 years from now, how do you want people to
Brooke Contreras (08:04)
Yes, of course. Of course. Yeah.
Absolutely, yes, yes.
Yeah.
Buddy Buck (08:25)
Think of Brooke, know, or queen be aesthetics, or just you as a person, 10 years from now, what are people gonna be saying or what you hope they're saying about Brooke Contreras?
Brooke Contreras (08:34)
Well, I hope that people see me as a supporter, a leader in the community, the best aesthetician in Duvall. Yeah. And just someone who supports everyone in our local community.
Buddy Buck (08:51)
so let's get back to last couple of minutes here, but just with Queen Bee Aesthetics. So how long have you been in business and what is one of your favorite, you know, I would say products or services that you provide that when people
sign up for it, you're like, ⁓ sweet, cause I really love doing this one thing.
Brooke Contreras (09:11)
Yeah. So I've been in business for two years now. We'll be going on the third year in April. So that's really exciting. still, yeah, I'm still building. It takes time, I know. So, ⁓ but it's been great. The support has been great. And one of my favorite services, I think, is the hydrodermabrasion because it really, really like
Buddy Buck (09:22)
Awesome.
Brooke Contreras (09:38)
just makes such an instant difference and it is an easy service that is super helpful. just, sorry, but the words are not coming. But yeah, it's, it does a lot for, yeah.
Buddy Buck (09:51)
No, that's okay.
Yeah, that's awesome. Say the term
again. What's it called? What's the service called?
Brooke Contreras (10:01)
Hydrodermabrasion.
Buddy Buck (10:02)
Hydroderm abrasion, hydroderm abrasion. How'd do? Pretty good. Okay. Okay. So go get your hydroderm abrasion today for sure. all right, cool. You've been a big supporter of Duvall TV. you know, liking comment, sharing YouTube, Instagram, all the things. And know, you and I are friends in IRL as the kids say in real life.
Brooke Contreras (10:06)
Yes. Great.
Mm.
That's right.
That's right.
Buddy Buck (10:25)
running around town, doing some fun stuff. ⁓
But if you could wave a magic wand for Duvall TV or livinginduvall.com, our new community site, what would be something that you would like to see on either of those platforms? That would be cool.
Brooke Contreras (10:40)
⁓ well, more of what you're doing right now, like the community spotlight. I love this because it gives people a chance, like a small business like me that's not on Main Street to have some spotlight, right? Or maybe some people that don't have a brick and mortar, you know, to have their business shown and talked about as well.
Buddy Buck (11:04)
Yeah, well, I noticed right when I launched Community Connect, you were right on it. So that's very valuable feedback. Thanks for sharing that. That's super impactful. Yeah, because you know, it's I've always done small business, small business, small business. And I'm just like, there's so many cool stories out here. And obviously you're a small business, to your point, getting more just community members. you you don't have to have a small business to have a cool story about Duvall or care about it and want to share your...
Brooke Contreras (11:08)
Yeah, yeah, I was very excited.
Right.
Right.
Buddy Buck (11:31)
thoughts
or maybe it's your neighbor or whatever. But we also did an interview with like one of the like football girls from the high school and that was super fun. You know what I mean? So yeah, so it's just been a really cool start to it already. But yeah, so love that you're on.
Brooke Contreras (11:37)
That's so awesome!
Buddy Buck (11:46)
so Brooke, where can people find you? So physical location and then how can they follow you on whatever platforms that you're using for socials?
Brooke Contreras (11:47)
you.
Yeah. So my business is on Valley Street. It is located right under the Puget Sound Driving Academy, local roots farm store, which are, that's also a very cool place. Yeah. Love it. ⁓ And next to the Duvall Thai building. Yeah. Across the middle. That's right.
Buddy Buck (12:10)
Very cool place. Yeah.
Duvall Thai, cool. So yeah, get some Thai after your blah,
blah, blah thing. I forgot how you say, but yeah, yeah, for sure. That's awesome. And then how about socials? So where can they follow you on socials? Everywhere.
Brooke Contreras (12:22)
Yep.
⁓
So yeah,
Facebook is Queen Bee Aesthetics. Instagram is Queen underscore Bee underscore aesthetics. And I have TikTok and...
And I think that's it. Yes. Yeah. ⁓
Buddy Buck (12:44)
Cool. You got all the things. You got all the things. You got the older
platforms, the neutrals, and then the younger with TikTok, of course. So that's awesome. Yeah. But, you know, kids get facials and things as well, right? Like they, ⁓ or as you should say, they have skin as well, right? Doesn't matter how old they are, they have skin.
Brooke Contreras (12:49)
Right. I'm not on TikTok much, but... ⁓
running.
They have skin. Yeah. It's never too early. It's never too
late. You know, it's never too early or never too late to start or taking care of your skin. And it's not just for women.
Buddy Buck (13:12)
Yep, gotcha. Okay, cool. Not just for women,
it's for anyone with skin people. All right, so we're going to end with a little fun ⁓ hot seat. Okay, so we'll put you in the hot seat. I'm going to ask you like an either or type of question. Okay, so I'm going to name two things, you're going to pick one and we'll just keep ripping through them. There's about six or seven of these. So all right, are you ready?
Brooke Contreras (13:18)
with it.
What was?
Okay.
Alright. ⁓
sure. Yeah. Alright.
Buddy Buck (13:36)
Drum roll, okay.
So coffee or beer?
Brooke Contreras (13:39)
